Eve – The Mother of All Living

Introduction

Eve, the first woman created by God, is both a figure of beauty and tragedy. She is remembered as Adam’s companion, the mother of all humanity, and a central figure in the fall of mankind (Genesis 3).

Life Story

God declared it was not good for Adam to be alone, so He created Eve from Adam’s rib. “Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.” (Genesis 2:22, NIV). Adam called her “woman” because she was taken out of man. Together they lived in the Garden of Eden, in innocence and unity.

Eve was tempted by the serpent, who questioned God’s command. She ate the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and gave some to Adam. “When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye… she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.” (Genesis 3:6, NIV).

As a result, sin entered the world. Eve experienced both judgment and mercy: she would face pain in childbirth, yet she was also promised that her offspring would crush the serpent’s head (Genesis 3:15–16).

Eve bore children, including Cain, Abel, and Seth, from whom humanity continued (Genesis 4–5). She lived as the mother of all living (Genesis 3:20).
